In Remembrance
This work is in honor of my late grandmother, Barbara Freer. It was created while exploring the theme, Growth. Being the sole grandmother the artist was able to have throughout her life, she was a huge part of her growth as a person. Barbara was a huge advocate of family and every year was able to get her family of 25+ together for a week, simply enjoying each others company. She instilled the importance of family in her granddaughter. She was also an incredibly talented quilter, creating a large body of work throughout her long lived life. To show work that she created during her life, two of her jackets and a blanket she quilted were photographed. After photographing they were digitally layered with her handwritten letters and recipes. They were then printed in the alternative photographic process of cyanotype printing.
The choice to intertwine her handwritten letters to her son and recipes she shared with her family paired perfectly with a few of the hundreds of quilts she produced during her life, all connecting to the importance of what family was to her. Nearly everyone in her surviving family is now in possession of a quilt she had created, showing just how cherished what she created was. She was the matriarch of our family and brought us all together, so this work is honoring her and the deep love she had for everyone close to her.
